The focus of our review wasn’t to test LaCie’s claims, as other reviews have already done so, and their own video proves the point quite well. LaCie produced a video which shows various torture tests, including a 10 ton truck being driven over the XtremKey. This drive is made to endure extreme temperatures, submersion in water, crushing force and serious shock and vibration. The materials used result in this being one of the toughest USB flash drives in existance. The key slides and screws into a metal alloy enclosure, which is then closed shut with a screw cap and rubber o-ring. The circuit board for the USB key is encased in metal and feels very sturdy. With the packaging out of the way, we can get a good look at the XtremKey. LaCie could do well by using a small thick cardboard box (which I believe they have done in the past for other products). I found the packaging difficult to open, and the environmental friendliness of this type of packaging is questionable. While this makes sense for display in stores, it makes for a frustrating start. The XtremKey comes supplied in plastic tamper-proof packaging. XtremKey is offered in capacities of 32GB or 64GB and comes with a three year warranty.

The XtremKey is also a performance USB flash drive with USB 3.0 connectivity. The metal enclosure has a smooth finish with a tapered design. This is probably the toughest USB flash drive on the market today, made possible by a metal alloy enclosure, and a screw-on cap which seals the key against dirt and moisture. The XtremKey by LaCie is a tough, durable and rugged USB 3.0 USB flash drive.
